Description

In several Matthean studies, the community behind the document is characterized as a corpus mixtum, a mixed body of both good and bad members. As a description of Matthew's community, the term has already been used in the classics of redaction criticism. Gunther Bornkamm, in his "Enderwartung und Kirche im Matthausevangelium," assumes that it is typical of Matthew to regard the "church" not as a composition of the chosen and the eternally saved but as a corpus mixture that will face the separation of the good and the bad only at the last judgment. (1) The same term was used also by Georg Strecker in his seminal redaction-critical work Der Weg der Gerechtigkeit. (2) Since then, the term has been part of the basic vocabulary of Matthean scholars. Ulrich Luz, for instance, uses the term corpus permixtum in his commentary on Matthew to characterize Matthew's ecclesiology. (3) Even Robert H. Gundry, who is not famous for following the lead of his colleagues, retitled the second edition of his commentary Matthew: A Commentary on His Handbook for a Mixed Church under Persecution, thereby referring to false as well as true disciples. (4) In addition to these examples, several others could be listed where the term corpus (per)mixture as such or similar concepts are used to characterize the inner state of Matthew's community. (5) Not all Matthean scholars, however, have found this term an appropriate characterization of the editor's community. Wolfgang Trilling in the introduction to the third edition of his Das Wahre Israel asked: "Wann stirbt dieser unsachgemasse Ausdruck einmal aus?" (6) Since the term is not yet dead in Matthean studies, the aim of this study is to examine its justification. (7) In the following I will argue that the view of Matthew's community as a mixed body of good and bad members is based on shaky arguments and that it has to be either revised or supported by some fresh insights. At the end I will discuss some points that may lead to a better characterization of Matthew's congregation. A detailed discussion of an alternative picture of Matthew's group falls beyond the scope of this study.
